David Sewall Miller

–

Scottsville Village, NY

Dr. D. Sewall Miller, Jr. passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, at the Teresa House in Geneseo, NY.

Sewall was born on April 12, 1936, in Portland, Maine to David Sewall and Hazel Washburn Miller. He grew up in Portland, ME and graduated from Deering High School in 1954.

Sewall attended Tufts University and graduated in 1958 with a D.D.S (dental degree). Upon graduation, he married Beverly Jane Horsman whom he had been dating since fifth grade, on May 31, 1958. Sewall joined the United States Air force as a Captain and served as a dentist stationed in Michigan. They had their first child, David Sewall III, in 1960. Following his service, he moved to Portland, ME with his family where he continued practicing dentistry.

In 1962, Sewall entered medical school at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. While in medical school their second child, Gerald Andrew, was born in 1964. After completing medical school, Sewall did his internship and residency through the University of Rochester at Strong Memorial Hospital and then began his practice in 1972 specializing in orthopedic surgery.

His third child, Tracey was born in 1968 and in 1975, Beverly, Sewall and their children moved to Scottsville, NY.

Sewall was a well-loved doctor known for his thoroughness, compassion, and exceptional bed-side manner. He retired in 1996 from his practice but continued to work part time.

Sewall was an avid outdoorsman who was most happy with a fly rod in his hand. He loved spending time at his camp in Maine and never turned down anything with freshly picked Maine blueberries.

He lost his wife Beverly in 2003 after her courageous battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He later remarried Sharon Howell in 2010 who provided him with love and laughter.

Sewall was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly Horsman Miller, his parents, David and Hazel; his brother, Donald; and his sister Ann Bowman.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Sharon Miller and his children David (Liz) Miller, Gerald Miller, and Tracey (Sam) Calandra. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, with a ninth on the way.

Friends and Family are invited to his Funeral Service on Saturday October 10, 2026 at 11AM at Union Presbyterian Church 1 Browns Ave. Scottsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Teresa House, 21 Highland Road, Geneseo, NY 14454 (www.teresahouse.org) who provided Sewall with such wonderful and personal care at the end of his life.
