Obituary for John Allen May

John May, age 78, of Rochester (Henrietta), went home to be with The Lord on January 18, 2023, while surrounded by his family after a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

John was a very active member of his church, and a veteran of the United States Navy. His hobbies included playing guitar, woodworking, and grilling in the middle of the winter. He loved his family and was very proud of his children. With a desire for continued opportunities for his family, John moved from Herkimer County to Monroe County all while being a lifelong volunteer working with the Salisbury and Chili volunteer fire departments, Henrietta ambulance, Scouts BSA, Friends in Service Helping (FISH) transportation service, and traveling on multiple medical mission trips to Haiti.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen, with whom he shared 52 wonderful years of marriage; their children Christopher (Heather) May, Bob (Crissy) May, and Shelly (Adam) McConnell; six grandchildren, Olivia, Emily, Ethan, Nathan, Aiden, and Vivian/Teegan; his brother, Robert (Maryanne) May; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones as well.

He was preceded in death by his Mother, Lila May; Father, Calvin May Sr.; Brother, Calvin May Jr.; and sister-in-law, Cottie May.

There will be calling hours and a celebration of life service to remember John’s good humor, kind and generous heart, and faithful devotion to Jesus at the Community Gospel Church, 5 Browns Ave. , Scottsville NY, from 2-4 PM on January 28, 2023 with his service and reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society.
