My deepest condolences to all of the Shafer family. As i think of my dear friend Joe [Jay, but i always called him Joe] today- on his birthday, i was very saddened to hear of the death of his father, Mr, Shafer. Although I have lost touch with Joe over the years and I have since have moved to South Carolina, I always think of Joe every January 8th. His birthday is etched in my mind. As I just looked to see if I could find a way to contact Joe to send him birthday wishes, I came across the announcement for Mr. Shafer and his passing just over a year now. A sad way to reconnect indeed. Long ago, during our college years together and again after, I was so very fortunate to have been invited to spend time with Clan Shafer. I was able to meet a truly remarkable family. Mr Shafer was always a quiet, steady and forceful presence. I do remember him well. I recall being struck at what a no nonsense man he seemed to be. He was friendly and obviously, a most caring man towards Mrs. Shafer and to his four terrific sons. I was invited to share in a Shafer family thanksgiving celebration. It was and still is to this day, an eating experience that i will never forget! I also had the pleasure of sharing in a family camping trip. I was always made to feel one of their own. Mr. Shafer along with Mrs Shafer, had done a remarkable job raising a remarkable family. His appearance in his photograph is exactly as i recall him. Sadly, I am sure that the world is a lesser place without him. My heartfelt thoughts go out to each and everyone of you around this anniversary, knowing that you have lost a wonderful husband and a father.
Sincerely, Kevin MacPherson

Ron and I were sorry to hear of Joe's passing. We are also sorry we are unable to be with you at this time and share our sympathy and stories in person.

I can almost imagine the wonderful smell of his pipe! Funny to me how smoke from other things can be so offensive, but I loved to be near Joe when he lit up! I remember him making my sisters and me laugh when he made some silly sounds or gestures, with the ever-present twinkle in his eyes!
He seemed comfortable speaking to us one-to-one or in a small group, but I think we may have been the same in some ways, in other situations. I often feel uncomfortable and quiet within family gatherings, not knowing what to say. Perhaps Joe shared some of my feelings?

Please know that Joe will be remembered by us in his loving, fun way, especially every time I smell a pipe!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Margie and Ron DeLettera
