Obituary for William F. Whitcomb

William F. Whitcomb
William Whitcomb, 91, passed away on December 9, 2015 with his family by his side at his home in Monroe, Virginia. William (Bill) was born in Auburn, NY on July 6, 1924 to William and Anna (Schultz) Whitcomb. Growing up, Bill attended the Rochester City Schools and at the onset of WWII, at the age of 17, he joined the United States Marine Corp and served as a member of the First Marine Division. Bill saw action in the South Pacific Military Campaigns between May 20, 1942 and June 8, 1944. During this interval, Bill fought on the shores of Guadalcanal and also participated in action in the Cape Gloucester, New Britain area. After Bill returned home, he married his wife of 56 years, Mary Lorraine Brown. They settled in Scottsville, NY where they had two children (Kathy and Billy). Bill worked at Hallman’s Chevrolet in Rochester for many years, but later took a position with Monroe County Parks where he eventually retired. Bill was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing in the woods, fields, and streams surrounding the Rochester area. He was a skilled machinist and gunsmith and enjoyed restoring antique Model T automobiles and making replicas of antique firearms. Bill and Lorraine later relocated to Monroe, Virginia after retirement where he found himself involved in a new project in which he built a plane from scratch using blueprints to create a replica of a 1922 Pietenpol Air Camper.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Lorraine. He is survived by his children, Kathleen and her husband Michael; William and his wife Tammie; six Grandchildren; Kristinna, Thomas, Melissa, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Jeremy; and three Great-Grandchildren; Liam, Peyton, and Cooper.
The family will receive friends on Monday April 25th from 5 to 7 pm with his service to follow at 7 pm at the J.H.Cameron Funeral Home, 26 Rochester St. Scottsville. Private Interment. Memorials may be made to the Rochester Heart Assoication, 25 Circle St., Rochester, NY 14607.
