Paul was born in Wheeling, W. Va and spent his youth in Salineville and Columbiana, Ohio. He attended Ohio State University but upon selection for the Navy V12 program he transferred to Colgate University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in June, 1945. He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1949. He interned at Genesee Hospital in Ob/Gyn and Highland Hospital in Internal Medicine. He served 2 years active duty in the US Army from June, 1951-1953, the first year with the 1st Medical BN, 1st Div in Kitzingen, Germany, the second at the 98th General Hospital in Munich, Germany, attaining the rank of Captain. Following discharge in June, 1953 he was a resident physician in Internal Medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany, NY until 1955. In July, 1955 he opened an office for General Family Practice, first in his home at 20 Browns Ave, and then in a new office at 822 Browns Road in Scottsville, NY. His practice was totally self-established and he took pride in the fact that he was able to treat many needs of his patients sparing them trips to the emergency room or outside labs. Mornings were devoted to house calls and hospital and nursing home visits, afternoons and evenings to office visits. Paul was in the charter group of physicians to take the board exams in the newly established American Academy of Family Physicians.
In 1978 he accepted a position as Staff Physician at St. John’s Home in Rochester, NY, retiring in 1992. In his retirement he pursued new adventures among which was filling locum tenens positions for the Indian Health Service in Elko and Sissaton NV, Red Lake MN, and Oneida NY. He worked at Genesee Country Museum as an interpreter for 20 seasons, interpreting NYS history for visitors in the “little red schoolhouse”, the land office, and the physician’s office, where he wrote an early history and encouraged staff to acquire leeches for illustrative purposes. Music was an important part of his life, he loved classical music and sang with his church choirs, the Henrietta Chorale, and the Genesee Country Harmonics.
He loved downhill skiing, participating until age 75. He and Beverley took many wonderful trips, including to Alaska, China, Norway, Great Britain, several European countries and our National Parks. Paul was an avid reader with a keen interest in history and geography, always having an atlas within reach. Though not a NYS native, he could sketch a state map from memory, naming all the counties. He happily provided detailed directions whenever his children were traveling. He loved time spent in Myrtle Beach, SC with son, grandsons, and families. He was a man of unwavering social convictions, conservative in nature. Bible study was important to him and he attended the Thursday am session at his church, St. Mark Lutheran, until the very end.
Calling hours will be 4-7 pm Friday, March 11 at J.H. Cameron Funeral Home, 26 Rochester St, Scottsville, NY. Paul’s memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 779 Erie Station Rd, W. Henrietta NY 14586, with a reception to follow. His interment will be at Mt. Albion Cemetery, Albion, NY at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mark Lutheran Church organ fund or the Scottsville Free Library, 28 Main St, Scottsville, NY.
