Obituary for James J. Martin Sr.

James J. Martin Sr.
James J. Martin Sr. of Scottsville, NY passed away peacefully at home at age 80 on December 25th 2016 surrounded by his closest family members.

Born in the original family homestead on Quaker Road, Jim was predeceased by his parents George Dewey Martin & Thelma Mae (Beatty) Martin. His faithful wife of over 50 years, Barbara J. (Briggs) Martin, Siblings; Vera (Raymond) Walls, Mark (Vi) Martin, June Martin and loving daughters Sherry Pappa, and Darlene Wrisley.

He is survived by sisters, Gloria (Jake) Holley of Nunda, Betty Morley of Rochester, his daughter, Denice (Jeffrey Jones) Martin, and sons, James and Mark Martin. Grandchildren Bradley, Emilee and Ryan Millet. Tracy, Edward (Vicki) and Jason Pappa. Kristina (Trey) Kline, Kimberly and Jennifer Craig. Great Grandchildren, Cousins, and many close friends including Terry and Cindy Samson, and Vern Palmer.

Jim was known for his hard work ethic, determined attitude, and sense of humor. He was a long time union member of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers BAC Local #3 in Rochester, and he was also a co-founder of Martin & Millet Masonry (1988) in Scottsville. Along with being an expert mason, Jim was an avid gardener and homesteader where he took pride in the home that he built for his family. He enjoyed spending his free time in the sun tending to his livestock, as well as the football field size garden which helped Jim provide for his family.

Always a man of his word, Jim had qualities that truly are rare to find today. Even those who have only known him a short period of time were inspired by his beautiful masonry craftsmanship, the strength of his spirit and character, and his wealth of knowledge. Jim prided himself on working with his hands, and was proud of the fact that his grandson Brad, is now carrying on the family trade with his own masonry business.

At Jim’s request, there will be no calling hours. A family and friends memorial for Jim is being planned for late spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jim's name to your favorite charity.
