Celebration and tribute to the life of my friend Ernie Swingle - Ernie and I were blessed with a special bond. He was a dedicated husband, father and friend. Our friendship was initiated in 1954 when I was a Sophomore in High School. As a young man he was my mentor in so many ways. He provided me with inspiration and motivation to be the best I could. His interest in me was instrumental in my selection to be the Boys State candidate for the American Legion Smith-Warren 367 of Scottsville conference in 1955 and there I experienced citizenship and leadership training which instilled courage and belief in myself. My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, put him in my life for a reason and I have been so thankful for that gift. As a Veteran of World War II in the Navy, Ernie shared many experiences with me which I treasure to this day. Having served in the military for 27 years, I appreciated him even more. As I traveled the world I always remembered his encouragement and advice and shared them with him and Marcia via telephone and on my returns to Scottsville. I am very proud to have had him as a friend. We were able to cement our relationship and emotions succinctly. We shared many sensitive circumstances as life presented them; including the loss of a spouse. I truly appreciate his remembrances and talks with my mother, Ethel and my sister Delores during their exercises around town. He seemed more like my older brother or uncle because of the sincere concern for me and my family. I thank God each moment for the happiness I was able to share with him with my wonderful wife , Diana. We would tease each other constantly and spent many joyous moments together. I remember trying to get used to his cat and dog and finally did! We will miss you Ernie as a giant pillar of the community providing leadership and integrity. You were a dear friend to many.
